Volunteers Help Make a Difference for United Way’s Day of Caring

On Friday, May 9th, Chimp Haven welcomed 18 volunteers from Harrah’s Casino, Harrah’s Louisiana Downs, and AEP SWEPCO. These gracious volunteers donated their time to help the chimpanzees at Chimp Haven as a part of the United Way’s Day of Caring.

Volunteers from 37 companies participated in this one day, community wide event that matches willing volunteers with local non profit organizations.

“We can’t thank these volunteers enough for their time, said Lee Anna Naranjo, Volunteer Coordinator for Chimp Haven. “They were able to help out in so many ways that really made a difference for the staff as well as the chimpanzees.”

These dedicated volunteers spent their day making treats for the chimpanzees as part of Chimp Haven’s enrichment program, completing landscaping, and making chimpanzee hammocks from used fire hose. The hammocks will be placed in the chimpanzee’s bedrooms to be used for sleeping, nesting, and resting.

With over 130 chimpanzees at Chimp Haven, volunteers play a crucial role in the enrichment program here. Each chimpanzee receives some type of enrichment; a treat, time with staff, or toys, every day. On Friday, volunteers made apesicles (frozen fruit juice with oranges and bananas), oatmeal, popcorn ice cream cones, and paper towel tube foragers for the chimpanzees. Some volunteers even got brave enough to try a few of these treats themselves.

Chimp Haven would like to thank Geno Iafrate, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of Horseshoe Casino and Hotel, Harrah’s Louisiana Downs for sponsoring the United Way’s Day of Caring and for coming out to Chimp Haven and volunteering your time to help us in our mission of “Making a Difference…. One Chimpanzee at a Time.”

Other sponsors include the following: KSLA News Channel 12, Brookshire’s, Standard Printing Company, Phil Nadeau Financial Advisor, Edward Jones and Querbes and Nelson.

Thank you employees from Harrah’s Louisiana Downs and AEP SWEPCO for making a difference in the lives of the chimpanzees at Chimp Haven!
