Harvest Time At Chimp Haven
Thu May 20, 2010
Chimp Haven is doing its part for the “Eat Fresh, Eat Local” food movement that is sweeping across the United States. Mustard greens, lettuce, cucumbers, plums, and peaches are currently being harvested from Chimp Haven’s garden and orchard to feed the chimpanzees. Still to come are pears, corn, squash and, finally, pumpkins. Visitors are always amazed at the size of Chimp Haven’s fruits and vegetables. The secret is in the compost, of which there is quite a bit, since more than 120 chimpanzees live at Chimp Haven. With diets of fruits and vegetables, they produce the perfect soil supplement!

Chimp Haven summer caregiver interns, Natalie Whittington from Metairie, Louisiana and Kristina Miller from Ayden, North Carolina, harvest Chimp Haven produce to feed to the chimpanzees.
