Winter at Chimp Haven means lower temperatures, less vegetation in the habitats, and shorter days. The chimpanzees adjust to the winter well, finding warm spots to lounge in the sun and groom with friends, nesting in beds of pine needles and leaves, or cuddling up with a blanket or stuffed animal to help keep warm! The chimpanzees have heated indoor bedrooms that they can retreat to but they often spend time in the sunshine with their friends. The chimpanzees continue to receive fruits and vegetables that are in season during the winter months and have also been tasting pinecones and other natural items in their habitats as well.
