June Chimpanzee Discovery Day a Success!
Wed Jun 18, 2008
Over 500 visitors braved the unpredictable weather this past weekend to attend Chimp Haven’s June Chimpanzee Discovery Day! As visitors made their way down the forested path to the five acre habitats Saturday a light rain was falling. It didn’t keep the chimpanzees from enjoying the fresh fruit and “apesicles” placed in the habitat though. Throughout the morning, guests observed the chimpanzees exhibiting many natural behaviors, including climbing trees and termite fishing.
Students from LSUS came to Discovery Day as part of a psychology class. “It was great to see these students taking the opportunity to enjoy a community event where they can apply material they’ve learned in class to chimpanzee behavior and how it relates to humans,” observed Andrew Stephenson, Chimp Haven behavior intern.
June's Chimpanzee Discovery Day theme was a “Hawaiian Luau” complete with Polynesian dance lessons and snow cones. Children and adults participated in Polynesian dance lessons taught by Chimp Haven interns, Brittany Atkinson and Amanda Love. “Discovery Days is an amazing opportunity for the public to see what Chimp Haven is all about,” says Meagan Hosey. “When visitors actually get to watch the chimps in their natural environment it is inspiring.” Visitors also met with Kathleen Candito, Chimp Haven’s Colony Manager for a “chimp chat” about the 138 chimpanzees living at Chimp Haven.
Many visitors donated items including fresh pineapple, mangos, and coconuts that the chimpanzees will enjoy. Thank you! And thank you to all the volunteers that assisted and interacted with visitors to educate them about chimpanzee diet, care, and behavior as well as the contributions chimpanzees have made!
The next Chimpanzee Discovery Day will take place September 13th from 9am to Noon. For directions or more information please call our Chimp Haven Hotline at 318-925-5630.
