Lawsuit Against Chimp Haven by Former Employee Dropped
Wed Mar 26, 2008
On Monday, March 24, 2008, the plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against Chimp Haven and others in 2006, voluntarily moved to dismiss their suit.
“We are very happy that Chimp Haven’s reputation of excellence and accountability remains untarnished. We have all the safeguards, staff expertise, and independent oversight that assures the chimpanzees receive the best care,” said Dr. Linda Brent, President and Director of Chimp Haven.
Chimp Haven has accomplished a great deal in the past few years, including achievements in chimpanzee group formation, national accreditation, fundraising, education and fiscal responsibility.
The plaintiffs, a former Chimp Haven employee and former volunteers for the organization, voluntarily dismissed the suit on Monday.
“We can now redirect precious resources to our priority of taking care of the chimpanzees,” Brent said.
Chimp Haven, The National Chimpanzee Sanctuary, is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide a permanent retirement sanctuary for chimpanzees no longer used for biomedical research, entertainment, or as pets. Located 25 miles southwest of Shreveport, La. in the Eddie D. Jones Nature Park in Caddo Parish, Chimp Haven opened its doors in Phase I to the first residents in April 2005. The sanctuary is now home to 140 retired chimpanzees.
