Chimp Haven Recognizes Dedicated Volunteers

Mon Jan 21, 2008

Southwood East LabStaff and volunteers of Chimp Haven met this weekend during Chimp Haven's Annual Volunteer Brunch and Awards Ceremony which took place Saturday, January 19th at the sanctuary.  This annual event recognizes individuals and organizations in the community that have volunteered to help the chimpanzees at Chimp Haven.

Southwood East Lab Students

Southwood High School EAST Lab was recognized as the volunteer of the year.  Students have partnered with Chimp Haven since 2006, providing assistance during Chimpanzee Discovery Day, a free public event held seven times a year at the sanctuary.

EAST Lab students designed the Endangered Species of Africa exhibit now on display at each Chimpanzee Discovery Day.  They continue to staff this exhibit and provide interactive games and activities for visitors. During 2007, Southwood EAST Lab students volunteered over 300 hours at Chimp Haven.

Volunteers hand out enrichment

"We have seen our volunteer program grow immensely this year," said Lee Anna Naranjo, volunteer coordinator, "Our volunteers give so much of themselves in order to reach out to the community and to give back to the animals that have given so much to us."

Volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 18, LSUS Biology Club, Cub Scout Pack 9, Stephen F. Austin students, as well as individuals from the Shreveport and Bossier community have also contributed their time and talents to Chimp Haven.

Volunteers made over 4,400 enrichment items for the chimpanzees, donated over 1,000 hours, and educated 6,000 visitors in 2007.

A special thank you to Kroger on Youree Drive and Columbia Cafe who generously donated supplies for this event.
