Stories from a Caregiver

With cold mornings presenting themselves at Chimp Haven, the care staff has begun giving out extra blankets to the chimpanzees in order to help them keep warm.  The other morning during the daily food toss, Sarah was spotted in the play yard flipping through a book while seated in a patch of sunshine on top of a fleece blanket that had been smoothed out flat on the ground.  She looked up and gestured to receive her morning produce and then turned back to the book, which was about a child’s snow day, careful to see each page.  At times she would turn to a new page to realize she had skipped some in between. She would then carefully peel apart the pages that were stuck together so we wouldn’t miss any of the book!  It is always interesting to watch the chimpanzees display human-like behavior.  Had Sarah been taught to “read” a book earlier in her life?

I also enjoy watching Emma, another chimpanzee that readily displays a great deal of intelligence.  I am a new caregiver at Chimp Haven and in learning to shift chimpanzees from their indoor bedrooms to outdoor areas, I must be certain to secure all locks properly.  While I was shifting her group, Emma was sitting in front of me watching me lock the doors.  With a lock in my hand, I hypothetically asked Emma, “Where does this go?”  To my surprise, Emma pointed exactly where the lock was supposed to go!
