Sheena cannot hear, but she still communicates well with the chimpanzees in her group. She is very vocal and often wields large sticks, up to six feet long, to intimidate other chimpanzees when food and treats are being distributed. She is more bark than bite, but she nonetheless tends to get what she wants. She also gets what she wants from staff members as well, often insisting on being fed in a particular location in her enclosure. Because of the aforementioned behaviors, Sheena’s nickname is “Warrior Princess.”
Most chimpanzees drink water from an especially designed spigot, but Sheena prefers to drink from a cup or bucket. She will take her cup over the spigot and fill it with water, or even ask her caregivers to squirt juice into her cup so she can drink it in a more civilized fashion! Sheena has a lot of personality and can often be seen trying to monopolize an entire bucket sized juice treat at our Chimpanzee Discovery Days!
