Halloween at the Haven

There were no scary or spooky sounds heard on Halloween at Chimp Haven. Pant hoots and food barks filled the air as the chimpanzees received their pumpkins. It’s always so exciting to watch the chimpanzees eat novel foods. Some chimpanzees like Jessica and Anne surrounded themselves with a pumpkin patch while others, like Magnum, preferred to beg from the other chimpanzees. Mason was unique with his white pumpkin and eventually shared it with Magnum who graciously accepted. Some of the chimpanzees found another use for their treat. Henry got great enjoyment out of smashing the pumpkins and was very proud of his accomplishment.

In addition to the pumpkins, our enrichment technician, Erin, wore masks for the chimpanzees. Flick, one of our newest boys who claps if you dance for him, was thoroughly captivated by the masks. Most of the chimps, including Keeli and Paul, solicited chase play, especially with the chimp and gorilla masks. With the cooler temperatures, pumpkin treats, and interaction with masks, it was a wonderful Halloween at the Haven!

Can you post a few pictures of the chimps reactions to the halloween masks? How interesting!

    Hi Cathy,
Unfortunately it is really hard to photograph the chimpanzees and staff in the areas where we show them the masks. Maybe next year we will try to get some video! Thank you for your suggestion.
