Chimp Haven is thankful to our local physicians who have offered to assist our veterinarian, Dr. Raven Jackson, in providing excellent medical care to our chimpanzees. Chimp Haven has developed a Consulting Physicians Program because chimpanzees have similar anatomy and suffer from many of the same ailments as humans.  Through this program, local doctors with various specializations have agreed to help the chimpanzees.  We are happy that one of our Consulting Physicians, Dr. G. Ghali , performed maxillofacial surgery for Jerry Allen, a male chimpanzee who spent more than 40 years in medical research. Jerry suffered from masses on his maxillary region that were suspected to be ossifying fibromas. The masses were large and appeared to have an effect on his ability to eat and drink.  Dr. Ghali and his staff removed the masses which has significantly improved Jerry’s quality of life.
