Recently C.J. made headlines when she and an adult male chimpanzee, Buddy, escaped from their enclosure at a private residence in Las Vegas. Buddy was shot by authorities and C.J. was tranquilized and recaptured.
When chimpanzees are taken from their mothers as infants to be pets and continue to live in species-isolation, they do not develop appropriate social behaviors and communication skills. So, as adults, they can no longer live with humans, and they do not know how to interact with chimpanzees. Pet chimpanzees end up in wretched situations.
Chimps Inc., a fellow NAPSA (North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance) member, has agreed to accept C.J. at their professionally run sanctuary in Bend, Oregon. Chimp Haven is happy for the positive outcome for this pet chimpanzee.
