This past week I had to say goodbye to one of my old friends here, Junior.

People often inquire about what level of interaction the animal care staff at Chimp Haven have with the chimpanzees. There are occasions when one or more group members decide there is absolutely no reason I should be standing about ignoring him or her and he or she is determined to get my attention, often by any means necessary. Yesterday, while gardening at Chimp Haven, I stopped to say hello to Tika. In the early morning, when the sun comes out and the day caregivers have not yet arrived, things begin to get interesting. It was a really heart-warming moment to know that as important as fruit was to the chimpanzees, these girls would just give it up to avoid hurting the other’s feelings. To gaze into a chimpanzees eyes is like staring into a piece of yourself. I was excited but a little nervous when I decided to test out my donation of childhood toys to the chimps by giving a big stuffed panda to Grandma. Running up and down the yard we go, Elke is truly one of the sweetest chimps I know. There is no better feeling in the world than making a new chimpanzee friend!Chimpanzee Laughter
