When I play for the chimpanzees, they’re not the only ones receiving enrichment.
Staff Blog
Several of the chimpanzees at our facility have attachment objects, which the staff refers to as their “babies…” These babies are usually unique to the chimps that care for them, and they do not typically share these attachment objects. However, all rules were out the window in The Great Baby Switch of 2013. Chimp Haven has many sets of family members that have lived apart prior to arriving at Chimp Haven. One of the best parts about being a chimpanzee care giver is training. The double doors swing open forcefully and I catch the first glimpse of the precious cargo. After working with chimpanzees for nearly a decade, their intelligence still never ceases to amaze me. As new chimpanzees arrive from southern Louisiana, we are busy with introductions regularly. Tika is one of our spunky chimpanzees. She is always observing what the caregivers are doing. Being able to give genuine moments of happiness to each chimpanzee makes this job special. Yet my most memorable time has bee the ability to watch infant, Valentina Rose grow. The Great “Baby” Switch of 2013
