Veterinarian 

Job Summary

Provide medical care for the chimpanzee colony.  Prevent, control, diagnose, and treat conditions and diseases within the chimpanzee colony. May supervise the work of other veterinarians and/or veterinary technicians.

Duties and Responsibilities

The veterinarian will be responsible for providing routine and emergency health care to chimpanzees. Other responsibilities include:  diagnosing and treating medical conditions, diseases, and injuries, providing wound care, planning and implementing preventive health programs, performing surgeries, euthanasias, and necropsies as required, in addition to participating in colony management decisions. Providing on-call services for response to emergencies outside of scheduled work hours will be necessary. The Veterinarian may coordinate chimpanzee health care with consulting veterinarians, specialists and staff. This person may:  train animal care staff on veterinary procedures, write grants, proposals, manuscripts, and other communications, supervise volunteers, work with visiting scientists, lead accreditation and certification efforts, and assist with regulatory reports and inspections. Additional duties include but are not limited to overseeing chimpanzee health records, controlled substance use and documentation, department budget, inventory, ordering and stocking of supplies, medications and equipment, hiring, training, and supervision of veterinary technicians.

Education & Experience

The Veterinarian position requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from accredited veterinary college. The successful candidate must be licensed to practice in Louisiana and demonstrate effective leadership. Experience working with chimpanzees is preferred.

President & Chief Executive Officer

The new Chimp Haven Chief Executive Officer will partner with the board of directors in sustaining and building strong, affirmative relationships with a broad set of stakeholders, including the National Institutes of Health, federal research laboratories (where retired chimpanzees are awaiting transfer to Chimp Haven), animal welfare organizations, and regional and state officials. She/he will implement strategy and annual goals with support from a strong team. Externally, the president & CEO will be a compelling presence for Chimp Haven locally, regionally and nationally, building awareness, influence and philanthropic support.

Candidates will possess the following education and experience:

  • Undergraduate degree required; major study in business, nonprofit administration, or animal sciences is desired.
  • Ten plus years of professional experience, with at least five years in a substantial leadership role in a nonprofit organization.
  • Several years of progressive experience in senior level fund development.
  • Experience leading and managing staff.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit board of directors.
  • Experience working with government agencies is a plus.

Maintenance Laborer

Job Summary

The primary function of this position is to provide maintenance, repair and improvement of facilities, grounds, structures and utilities. This position reports directly to the Director of Facilities and Grounds.

Duties and Responsibilities

The maintenance laborer will be responsible for assisting with routine preventive maintenance of equipment and facility systems; assisting with ensuring the physical condition of buildings do not deteriorate; assisting with the diagnosis and repair of machine malfunctions; building, repairing, and painting structures; transporting items; cleaning and organizing work areas; caring for established landscaping; using fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and other pesticides.  In addition this individual is responsible for gathering and removing litter and using a range of tools.

Education & Experience

Entry level requires a high school diploma or equivalent. No prior facilities or grounds maintenance experience is required, but an aptitude for maintaining the proper working conditions of the facility and grounds is necessary.
