 1.  ADMINISTRATIVE ASSOCIATE II THROUGH ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST - STAFF ACCOUNTANT
Open Position
Shift: Full Time/Days

Primary Function:
•Provide administrative accounting support for the organization.  Most duties performed under general supervision.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
•Provide administrative accounting support for particular program or department.
•May assist with administrative support of human resources, public affairs, education departments.
•Responsible for purchasing, accounts payable, general ledger activity, payroll activities and grants/contracts areas.
•Perform filing, scheduling, typing correspondence, copying.
•May assist with answering telephones and greeting visitors.
•May enter data into records databases.
•May research projects and edit materials.
•May monitor invoices and expense reports.
•Generate reports and correspondence.
•May help to train others and work with volunteers.
•Perform additional or related duties as required.
•May serve as team leader.
•May assist in training new employees.
•Must be familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures.
•Must rely on pre-established guidelines and experience to plan and accomplish goals.

Education and Experience Required:
•High school diploma or GED with eight years office experience required.
•A Bachelor’s degree and four years office experience may be substituted for the education/experience requirement.
•Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions and write legibly and accurately.
•Must be able to use common computer programs.  Experience with accounting software. 

Education and Experience Preferred:
•Associates degree in related field required.  Nine years office experience required.
•A combination of 11 years education and experience can be substituted for the above requirement.

2.  CHIMPANZEE ASSISTANT VETERINARIAN – VETERINARIAN/ASSOC. DIRECTOR
Open Position
Shift:  Normally days. Night and weekend work may be required.  Veterinarian is on call during off hours, unless back-up veterinarians are scheduled.

Primary Function
Provide veterinary medical care for sanctuary chimpanzee colony.   Reports to senior or top management.  Generally under the direction of the Director of the Facility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

•Provide routine and emergency health care to chimpanzees.
•Diagnose and treat diseases and injury.
•Plan and implement preventive health program.
•Perform surgery and necropsies as required.
•Oversee chimpanzee health records.
•Participate in colony management decisions.
•Participate and may lead educational programs.
•Train animal care staff on veterinary procedures.
•May supervise veterinary technicians.
•Supervise volunteers or students.
•Perform related duties as required.


Associate Director/Veterinarian additional duties
•Develop standard operating procedures.
•Develop and implement biosafety program.
•Usually serve on Sanctuary Chimpanzee Care Committee (IACUC).
•May serve as Attending Veterinarian
•May oversee animal care program in Director’s absence
•Hire, train and supervise veterinary technicians.
•May assist in writing grants.
•Lead accreditation and certification efforts.
•May analyze data and write up results for publication or presentation.
•Supervise volunteers and works with visiting scientists.

•Usually works under senior veterinarian or director.

•Knowledgeable about variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures.
•Performs a variety of complicated tasks.
•Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
•A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Associate Director/Veterinarian additional responsibilities

•Trains and supervises volunteers.

•Extensive knowledge and experience in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures.
•Recommends, plans and monitors long-term department objectives and policies.

Education and Experience Required:

Asst. Veterinarian
•Veterinary degree required.
•Ability to be licensed in Louisiana required.
•2 years experience required.
•Prefer experience working with nonhuman primates.

Associate Director/Veterinarian
•Veterinary degree required.
•Ability to be licensed in Louisiana required.
•Ten years work experience required.
•Five years experience working with nonhuman primates required.
•Prefer chimpanzee experience.
•Five years supervisory experience in animal facility required.
•Knowledge of safety and biohazard procedures and regulations required.

•Work may involve considerable outdoor work in various weather conditions. 
•Potential exists for animal bites and scratches. 
•Potential exposure to unpleasant odors, animal wastes, animal tissues and body fluids, toxic chemicals, zoonotic diseases (tuberculosis, shigella etc.), infectious agents (Hepatitis B,C, HIV, etc.).
•Weekend, holiday and night work may be necessary.
•Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program that includes hepatitis B and other inoculations is required.
•Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.

3.  Sanitation Technician  -  Husbandry 
2 Open Positions 
Shift: Part Time/Days

Primary Function
Provide care for the chimpanzees and their housing areas and improve wellbeing and prevent disease by close observation of chimpanzee behavior and careful cleaning procedures.  Most duties performed under direct supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Wash produce
• Prepare diets
• Sanitize enrichment items in accordance with USDA regulations and AAALAC standards
• Clean and/or sanitize bedroom and support areas (kitchen, fruit cooler, break room, storage, feed/bedding storage)
• Prepare/transport food, bedding and supplies
• Maintain records of health, behavior, cleaning, etc.
• Participate in educational programs as directed
• Perform related duties as required

 
Supervision and Responsibility
• Works under direct supervision of colony manager and animal care supervisor or senior animal care staff.
• Does not supervise anyone.
• Performs tasks as assigned.
• Relies on pre-established guidelines.
• Primary job does not typically require exercising independent judgment.

Education and Experience Required
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to work in a team environment, follow directions, and communicate effectively.
• Must have an aptitude for the care and well being of animals.

Education and Experience Preferred
• Experience with animals/experience with chimpanzees.

Open Internships:

1.  Environmental Enrichment Internship Announcement

Position Available:  Behavior Department – Environmental Enrichment Internship
Date Posted:  Open throughout the year

Internship Description:  Chimp Haven, Inc. will provide a unique opportunity to participate in an environmental enrichment program for captive chimpanzees in a sanctuary environment.  Interns will be introduced to chimpanzee behavior, as well as environmental enrichment methods and practical application.  Duties will include preparing enrichment items and cleaning enrichment devices.  Additional duties may involve researching, suggesting, constructing, and assisting in implementing new enrichment ideas as well.  Opportunities may become available for data collection on the efficacy of enrichment.

2. Chimpanzee Care Giver Internship Announcement

Position Available: Animal Care - Husbandry Internship

Internship Description: Chimp Haven, Inc. will provide a unique opportunity for three individuals interested in the behavioral or biological sciences to learn and participate in the care of captive chimpanzees in a sanctuary environment. This internship is designed for those individuals wishing to gain experience working with chimpanzees and will focus on their basic needs such as diet, sanitation, socialization, enrichment, and security. Through the experience, interns will gain knowledge of chimpanzee behavior and animal care.

Qualifications/Experience: Please send transcripts (for students), two letters of recommendation and a cover letter which details your interests. All internships will be competitive. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. A general understanding and concern for the well being of animals is required. Coursework in primatology, biology, or animal behavior is preferred but not required. Proof of a negative TB test and Tetanus vaccination is required.

Salary/funding: The internship is on a volunteer basis and provides no stipend. Housing may be available. Personal vehicle is required.

Behavior Department Internship Announcement

: Chimpanzee Behavior – Behavior Department Internship

Internship Description: Chimp Haven, Inc. will provide a unique opportunity for students in the behavioral or biological sciences to study captive chimpanzees in a sanctuary environment. Interns will be introduced to chimpanzee behavior and behavioral data collection, as well as being introduced to environmental enrichment methods and practical application. Other duties may include data entry and summarization, conducting literature reviews and preliminary analysis.

Qualifications/Experience: Please send transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a cover letter which details research interests, why you are interested in this position and any other qualifications. All internships will be competitive. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Coursework in primatology, biology, or animal behavior is preferred but not required.
