Advisory Board

In addition to its capable Board of Directors, Chimp Haven relies on the input of an Advisory Board who have diverse skills and a strong interest in the care and welfare of captive chimpanzees. The Advisors assist the Board of Directors in decision-making and strategic planning. Their contributions to the success of Chimp Haven are immeasurable.

Members of the Advisory Board include:

Kathryn Bayne, M.S., Ph.D., D.V.M., is the Associate Director of the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International and has extensive experience with laboratory primate environmental enrichment and regulatory requirements. Dr. Bayne is the President Elect of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and also serves as the Chair of the Animal Welfare Committee of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Expertise: behavioral primatology, laboratory animal medicine, accreditation of animal facilities, biohazard containment.

Jon Coe, ASLA, is an architect specializing in primate enclosures. Mr. Coe has been involved in the design of more than 150 design projects for more than 60 zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, theme parks and national parks in eight nations. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, American Society of Landscape Architects Fellow 1993, and the Australasian Regional Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums.

Leni Darrow, MBA, a former investment banking and real estate professional, is the President of the New York Foundation for the Arts Board of Trustees. MS. Darrow also sits on the International Council of the Nature Conservancy and the Board of Governors of the Social Accountability International. Expertise: money management, non-profit management.

L. Ron Forman is the President and CEO of the Audubon Nature Institute Inc. in New Orleans, La. Mr. Forman served as the President of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association from 1987 – 1988. Expertise: business management and fund-raising.

Jo Fritz is the Founder and Director of the Primate Foundation of Arizona. Ms. Fritz has more than 30 years of experience in creating and managing a chimpanzee facility as well as extensive experience in chimpanzee resocialization. Expertise: captive chimpanzee management, behavioral primatology, business management.

Hilton Klein, V.M.D., is the Senior Director of Comparative Medicine at Merck Research Laboratories. Dr. Klein provides strategic planning and direction for Merck animal care programs worldwide. He is the author of numerous scientific publications, serves on several professional boards, and teaches at Hahnemann University Graduate School in Philadelphia, Penn. Expertise: animal care programs, laboratory animal medicine, and accreditation of animal facilities.

Gail Laule, M.A., is a professional animal trainer and co-founder of Active Environments, an animal behavior consulting firm specializing in assisting facilities in developing behavior management programs to enhance the care and welfare of their animals. These programs include the use of positive reinforcement training techniques, environmental enrichment, and improvements in facility design. Ms. Laule has worked extensively with chimpanzees at the U.T.M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Bastrop, Texas; Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Ga.; and with numerous zoos internationally. Expertise: positive reinforcement training, facility design input, and animal welfare.

Victor Ostrower, M.D., is a gastroenterologist and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Ostrower graduated from New York Medical College and has been in the profession for 42 years. He is also an active community leader. Expertise: business management.

Steve Ross is the Supervisor of Behavioral and Cognitive Research at the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, Ill. He received his B.S. in zoology from the University of Guelph in his native Canada in 1993 and completed a master's from the University of Chicago in 2003. Ross joined Lincoln Park Zoo in 2000 as a research specialist and coordinated the research study evaluating the former Lester E. Fisher Great Ape House in preparation for the building of the new ape facility. Ross now coordinates the behavioral and cognitive programs of the zoo’s Lester E. Fisher Center for the Conservation of Apes and conducts research in cognitive psychology and applied animal behavior. He is also chair of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan. Expertise: behavioral primatology, facility design.

Erna Toback, Ph.D., is a primatologist and physical anthropologist who has studied the behavior of chimpanzees in the zoo, sanctuary and laboratory environment. Dr. Toback currently teaches Physical Anthropology at Santa Monica College in California. Expertise: behavioral primatology, chimpanzee laterally, communication and socialization.
